Celtic star Ki sparked fury by imitating a monkey when he scored for South Korea against Japan in the Asian Cup this week.
(略)
Ki explained: "The sight of those flags in the stand broke my heart. Sometimes being Korean is more important than being a football player."
But he later changed his story and insisted he was having a pop at SPL supporters. The 21-year-old said: “That performance was not directed at Japanese people. When I play at Celtic, our opponents’ fans call me a monkey and the celebration was towards people who make such racist remarks.”

The South Korea player sparked outrage when he apparently impersonated a monkey after scoring against Japan in their semi-final, which his side lost on penalties. Japanese media felt he was mocking his opponents.
However, the Japanese Football Association have accepted Ki’s claim that he was trying to draw attention to the abuse that the 22 year-old has suffered at away games since joining Celtic a year ago.
It is understood that one such incident is alleged to have taken place in a match at St Johnstone earlier this season. St Johnstone said they would investigate the claims.
"The treatment he got from the Scottish league, the people who made noises like the sound of the monkeys in Scotland when he played away games, that is something he wanted to highlight," said the Korea Football Association.
"Even though they call him a monkey as an Asian, he wanted to show how strong they are in Asia."
The Asian Football Confederation also accepted the explanation. “We are aware of the goal celebration but we don’t think it impacts on any country,” said AFC tournament director Tokuaki Suzuki.
“The issue has been resolved after communication between the Japan Football Association and the Korea Football Association. AFC will not take any legal action in this matter.”

Meanwhile, the Asian Football Confederation confirmed it will take no action against Celtic player Ki Sung-yeung’s perceived racist celebration following his goal for South Korea against Japan in Tuesday’s Asian Cup semi-final.
Ki claimed his intention was to highlight abuse in Scottish football. Ki opened the scoring from the spot at Al Gharafa Stadium and cele-brated by appearing to impersonate a monkey in an apparent derogatory reference to Japanese people — which outraged sections of the country’s media.
However, the Celtic midfielder claimed he was trying to hit back against abuse suffered while playing in Scotland.
South Korea eventually lost on penalties to their regional rivals after the last-four encounter finished 2-2.
A South Korea Football Association spokesman said: “The treatment he got from the Scottish league, especially in the away games, the people who made noises like the sound of the monkeys in Scotland when he played away games, that is something he wanted to highlight.”
